Report by Jack
Milner. " Martin Eggleton
of The George club, Meopham (being the Region's President) & already
the 2004 S/East Singles Champion,
with his doubles partner Matt Horrigan of the Lordswood club, playing as
team "Anything" won the 2004 S/East Doubles Championship. 20 teams took part in this last major event of the 2004
summer season, at the Plough & Chequers PH, Gillingham, on what was
generally a fine sunny day with only one brief rain downpour.

Report.The main
final was a great & enjoyable
spectacle of continuous shooting & pointing by both teams (there had to
be a lot of shooting for the worst
P&C top end piste had been selected !). This resulted in only one point
being won at just about every end, French playing style! It could also be
described as a nail biting final. However, the "1st call 4"
team of Dave Hurren & Kevin Spillett
were pipped to the post by the "Anything " duo of Martin Eggleton &
Matt Horrigan, who had the better run of the ' horrible' piste at the end to win
the Doubles Championship 13 points to 10.
South East hosted this year's match against Nord Maritime region at Plough and Chequers on August 14th. Particular thanks go to Chris and Jill Street of the Plough and Chequers for their excellent support including the catering and to Shepherd Neame for commemorative cloths for each French Player. Playing 15 aside triples the home team built up a lead in the two rounds before lunch of 20-10. However, following a convivial lunch the French teams mounted a come back taking 16 games to 14 but it was not sufficient with SE running our winners 34 - 26.

Although the
entry of just nine teams for a Regional title was very disappointing it did
represent a 50% increase on the number of teams that played in the same
competition last year. The teams were drawn into two leagues with the top two
from each going through to the semi finals. A tough league of five saw Half Moon (Jeff Mitchell, Mick Lucioni and Rob Hope) and Integrale (Dave Chalkly, Barry Wing and Matt Horrigan) both
win through on 3 wins a-piece. MMS (Martin Baker, Michel Hourcastagnou,
and Sylvan Borsi pictured L. to R. here with
their friend Angie Jamieson)
and Crows (Dorothy Bickford, Gladys
Tester and Martin Gordon) were
the top two teams in the
other league. The Crows made the most of home advantage
as they pulled off a memorable win over Integrale while another tight match saw
MMS victorious over Half Moon. The Crows accredited themselves well in the final
but it was the vastly more experienced MMS team that emerged as Regional
Champions. Both finalists will go on to represent the South East at the BPA's Champion of
Champions event. In the plate final
GRFC (Sandra Powell, Keith Atkinson and Mark Cooter) took the first prize
winning a tight final against Hilary
Lindsay, Chris Faithful and Gordon
"the flame haired Adonis" Howard. ( his words and not mine). Reporter M Cooter
The final regional qualifier of 2004 was held on July 11th at Half Moon with 19 teams taking part. See the Qualifier table for the detailed results. Therefore, for the Inter-Regional competition at Brean Sands on September 4th and 5th the top eight will contest the Division 1 Regional Championship, the 9-12th place finishers will contest the Challenge trophy and the 13-16th place finishers will play in the BPA Combined team in Division 2. In addition two Junior teams will be selected to play in the Division 1 and Division 2 teams.
Their triples partner, Jennifer Cooter (GRFC), was unlucky not to make it a double celebration as, playing with partner Michelle Tarbun from Essex, she just lost out in the final of the British Ladies Doubles to Plough & Chequers player Diz Murray and Christine Hughes of Wales.
The Regional Singles title was contested by 19 members, including
4 Juniors. With 4 Leagues there were 8 players qualified for the
main.
Results.
Losing Quarter Finalists were: Roy Pemberton, John Skingley, Paul Collins and Larry Belcher
Losing Semi Finalists were: Rob Harvey and Dean Ashby

Scotland have declined an invitation to the Inter-Regional Championships at Brean on September 4th and 5th so the South East will again be providing 4 triples and the Juniors for the BPA Select team in Division 2. This means that the top 16 from the regional qualifier series will be invited to take part in the number one petanque weekend of the calendar. So if you haven't got qualifier points yet it isn't too late! Get to Half Moon on July 11th, pick up a few points and you could easily book your slot.
